In January 2008, White Oak Family Physicians, PA formed Asheboro Research Associates in order to conduct clinical research studies. Clinical research studies are carefully designed to test the effects of good medication, medical treatment, or a device on a group of volunteers. Clinical studies are an important step in making new medications available to treat diseases, conditions, and to test their safety and their possible side effects.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must authorize a drug company’s proposal to conduct clinical studies. Drug companies must do years of laboratory research before they can begin testing medicines in humans. The FDA has extremely strict requirements that pharmaceutical companies and research centers must adhere to.
Each study has specific requirements such as ages, sex, or medical conditions for participants. The physician conducting the study will determine which volunteers are appropriate to participate in that particular study.
Should you become a volunteer? Volunteering to participate in a clinical study is one way to can contribute to the understanding of diseases that affect people as well as the development of new medicines and therapies. Without volunteers, research would not be able to bring new medicines and therapies to the market. Volunteer you are an important link in the long chain of research and testing for the development of new medications. Each year, thousands of volunteers play a vital role in making drug research possible.
